CLAY STOVE PRODUCTION
In kerika nambole, local artisans are preserving traditional craftsmanship by producing clay stoves, commonly known as "sigili", which are widely used for cooking in many Ugandan households. One artisan was observed carefully mixing and shaping clay, part of a detailed process that results in durable, energy-efficient stoves. The compound, filled with neatly arranged rows of drying sigilis, reflects both skill and steady demand for the product. These clay stoves are valued for their affordability and ability to conserve charcoal, making them a practical option for many low-income families. Despite the importance of this trade, artisans face several challenges, including limited access to modern tools, fluctuating weather conditions that affect drying, and minimal financial support.
